Bookpres introduces a new Behind the Cover series of blog posts sharing personal user stories from authors, bookshops, and publishers using Bookpres to get themselves and their work noticed.
Hello Christopher! Thank you for taking the time to talk with us. Could you please tell us a little bit about how you got into writing?
Hello! Thank you for the opportunity! I heard early rap/hip-hop music brought into the household by my older brothers, Jeff and Lance. It amazed me – what I was hearing. A light clicked inside me. I knew that’s what I wanted to do. Creating clever, intelligent, and crafty raps – it was the truth and the light to me. I started writing soon after. I was nine years old.
Walk us through the process of creating your book If Black Lives Mattered as a self-published author, from idea to final publication?
I knew that I had something to offer in regards to the Black Lives Matter movement. It started with my early involvement in the movement when I went to Ferguson, MO where Michael Brown was killed and where the resistance began. I looked at early poems, a letter I wrote to a Unitarian Universalist Church, and a reflection I had written. I needed those pieces to be in the book. I began looking at all of the poems that I had written and began to compile them in a Word file. Poem by poem, and the other mentioned writings, I had something to build. I decided to go with Lulu.com to self-publish the book. I went to the website and began the process. They make it easy with their format. I chose an image that stood out to me for the cover of the book. Later on, I had to craft a table of contents. This took the book in a new direction. The table of contents usually comes first in the process, but I created one to complete the book at the end. I am glad I did.
How do you get yourself and your work noticed?
I post my books and other creative projects on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, etc. I use social media to gain fans and customers. It’s a very effective way to get out there. I also use SoundCloud.com to get myself out there. Between Facebook, Twitter, and SoundCloud.com, I have thousands and thousands of fans and followers. I am thankful for that. I love what I do and reaching out to people!
Please describe how you are using or intend to use the sales and marketing features provided by Bookpres, to reach out to your audience?
As of late, I’ve used it to Tweet to my followers and fans. That’s been effective. Staying focused on
that is the key. Guerilla marketing through platforms like Bookpres. I thank Bookpres for the opportunity to host and promote my book there.
